Nani has instant impact on Venice debut and sets up crucial goal against Empoli

Nani had an instant impact on his return to Serie A, registering a brilliant assist on his Venice debut.

And he wasted no time contributing to his new club, earning an assist in Venice’s 1-1 draw with Empoli on Sunday.

The former Manchester United winger started on the bench but entered the fray in the 72nd minute with his side trailing 1-0.

It took just over a minute to make an impact, setting up David Okereke in the 73rd minute.

The Portuguese, wearing the No.20 shirt, played a clever brace with Mattia Aramu then slipped a brilliant through ball to Okereke who scored home to make it 1-1.

Speaking after his appearance, he told DAZN via Football Italia: “It’s a really good start!

“The team played well, we know it was an important moment for us, we have to take as many points as possible. We could have won here today, but it’s a long way to go and we know that we can do much better.

“All our players did better in the second half, there was more aggression and that paid off. The equalizer boosted our confidence, but we didn’t have the chance to win it.”

Nani, who was on loan at Lazio in the 2017/18 season, added: “I was a bit nervous because I haven’t had many training sessions and I’m not at the best of my form, but when you want to do well, it goes your way.

“Serie A is the best, I think it’s a fantastic time to play here. I need to practice my Italian a bit, it’s been a while!”

Venezia hope to build on their experience to avoid relegation this season.
